The Presence in the Paint
For an artist, the creative process is not a rigid template but a living, breathing dialogue. Each canvas demands its own language, dictated by its unique purpose and the emotional current driving it.
When a persistent idea takes root, revealing multiple possibilities and a strong desire to explore them, my instinct is to "squeeze" that concept entirely. This exploration dictates everything from the physical materials and color palettes to the structural approach of the piece.
Some paintings require a smooth, deliberate touch to achieve a specific, refined outcome. Others demand immediate, physical action, where the act of execution becomes more important than the final result. Sometimes, it is the final image itself that must carry that raw energy and message. Capturing a feeling of pure action—like a bold brushstroke that lets the paint drip freely—is impossible with total control. It requires a total leap of faith. You have to commit 100%.
Surrendering control is an obvious risk, but it is precisely what forms the essence of the artwork. The piece gains a distinct presence. It allows the viewer to see the painter in action, tracking the movement and sensing the underlying emotion. This dynamic approach brings fresh air to my daily existence, feeds my creativity, and drives the evolution of my work. In fact, most of my new ideas are born from these leaps of faith, where accidental mistakes frequently become the exact focal points for my future development.
